For the first time, the Chinese island of Hainan has overtaken Thailand in monthly Russian tourist arrivals, marking a seismic shift in outbound travel patterns (according to info by ATOR). In June 2026, Hainan received 70,115 Russian visitors – 7% more than Thailand’s 65,518. Thailand has long been the undisputed leader for Russian beach holidays in Asia. Yet June’s numbers tell a different story. Hainan’s 73% year‑on‑year growth propelled it past the Thai kingdom, with Russians accounting for nearly half (46.09%) of all foreign arrivals to the island that month. Russian Travel Digest has already written about rapid growth of that destination among Russian travelers.
“Every month of 2026 we are seeing record growth in Russian arrivals, but June was especially remarkable – we not only broke our own records but also exceeded a key competitor,” commented Mr. Song Shi, representative of Hainan’s Department of Culture and Tourism.
Over the first six months of 2026, Hainan welcomed 378,098 Russian tourists – a 68.4% jump from the same period last year. While Thailand remains the overall leader for the half‑year with 1,012,250 Russian visits, and Vietnam follows with 742,679, Hainan’s accelerated momentum suggests the gap may narrow further in the second half. Notably, Russians made up 37.78% of all inbound tourists to Hainan in the first half – a share that swelled to 46.09% in June alone, underscoring the island’s growing dependence on and appeal to the Russian market.
Despite its rising popularity, Hainan ranks only third in price competitiveness among Asian package tours for July, behind Thailand and India (Goa). A one‑week tour for two, including flights, starts at 148,400 rubles (~ $1,936). Thailand remains the most affordable option, while Hainan’s pricing reflects its premium positioning and direct flight costs.
Several factors underpin Hainan’s triumph over Thailand in June:
- Visa‑free entry for Russian citizens, simplifying travel
- Expanded charter and block flight programs, increasing seat capacity
- Aggressive summer promotions from hotels and resorts
- Geopolitical shifts that have redirected some demand from the Middle East and Europe to China
Tour operators report that booking depth already stretches to February 2027, with winter season 2027 tours now open for sale, including block‑chain charters. Based on current sales, operators forecast a 30% growth in summer season demand overall.
