What happens with tourists in Kamchatka after the earthquake
After a powerful earthquake off the coast of Kamchatka on July 30, 2025, the resulting tsunami quickly spread from the epicenter across the Pacific Ocean. Problems also affected air traffic between the continental United States and Hawaii. Several planes heading to Honolulu were forced to return. In Japan, the runway at Sendai Airport was temporarily closed due to the threat of a tsunami, and ferry service between Hokkaido and Tokyo was suspended.
According to official data from regional authorities and prompt comments from tour operators, tourists in Kamchatka were not harmed. The regional airport of Elizovo is currently operating normally.
However, according to tour operators, due to the threat of a tsunami, sea excursions and walks in the region have been cancelled.
The Kamchatka Volcanoes Nature Park Network has temporarily closed tourist routes due to increased seismic activity. The following sites in the South Kamchatka Nature Park will be closed to visitors for five days: Gorely Volcano, Opasny Canyon, the foot of Mutnovsky Volcano, and the caves of Gorely Volcano. Tourists are also asked to refrain from visiting Avachinsky, Kozelsky, and the Camel extrusion volcanoes. The reason for the restrictions is the risk of rockfalls, which increases in unstable geological conditions. If necessary, the restrictions will be extended.
