Russia Plans to Simplify Visa Regulations with Four African Countries
Russians' interest in exploring the African continent continues to grow, according to travel industry experts. On average, the tourist flow increases by one and a half to two times annually, some travelers become regular buyers of tours.
Currently, Russians can visit 11 African countries visa-free. Russians can stay in Morocco, Namibia, Tunisia, and South Africa for up to 90 days; in Cape Verde and Mauritius for up to 60 days; in Angola, Botswana, Malawi, and the Seychelles for up to 30 days; and in São Tomé and Príncipe for up to 15 days. Egypt is also considered a relatively visa-free country. Visas are issued at the airport upon arrival.
The number of visa-free African destinations will grow. The Russian Foreign Ministry announced four more African countries to open to Russians in the nearest future.
The possibility of concluding bilateral intergovernmental agreements on mutual visa waivers for short-term trips with Zambia (up to 90 days), as well as with Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and Eswatini (up to 30 days) is currently being explored. Drafts of the relevant documents are already under review by foreign partners.
The waiver of visas for Russians in Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and Eswatini is a signal that Africa is actively entering the global tourism market, and Russia is becoming a desirable partner, according to experts from the Russian Union of Travel Industry.
When it comes to the tourism potential of these four countries, Zambia is the undisputed leader. It offers the most balanced and developed product: home to the famous Victoria Falls, some of Africa's best walking safari parks (South Luangwa), and a fairly well-developed infrastructure. Second place goes to Zimbabwe, which shares Victoria Falls with Zambia and boasts the majestic ruins of Great Zimbabwe. Mozambique is a niche and expensive destination for beach lovers and those seeking diving in the Bazaruto Archipelago, while Eswatini is best visited as a cultural complement to a trip to neighboring countries.
