Dominicana compensates the reduction of tourist traffic from Europe by growth from Russia
According to the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic, the number of tourists who arrived in the country in the first quarter of 2019 increased by 4.6% compared to the same period of 2018. At the same time, 65% of guests came from North America, 21.6% from Europe, 10.4% from South America, 2.6% from Central America and the Caribbean, and 0.3% from Asia and the rest of the world.
The decline from Europe by 4% was partially compensated by growth of tourist traffic from Russia, Poland, Ukraine, Italy and Romania. In particular, the data for Russia shows an increase of 8.5%: in the first three months of this year, 63,585 Russian tourists rested in the country.
66.4% of tourists entered the country via Punta Canta Airport, 14.5% via Las Americas to Santo Domingo, 9.7% via Puerto Plata, and to the terminals of La Romana, Cibao, La Isabela (Santo Domingo) and El Catey accounted to the remaining 9.4% of the total number of foreign visitors.
For the Dominican Republic, the tourism industry is one of the main sources of income, last year it amounted to $ 7.6 billion. In 2018, the country hosted 6.5 million tourists and 1 million cruise liner passengers.
Statistics also records an increase in the ratio of spending and length of stay in 2018 compared with 2017. The average size of daily expenses for tourists was $ 136.48, which is $ 2.94 more than the average for 2017.
The average stay in the country was 8.37 nights - slightly lower than in 2017, when this figure was 8.61 nights.
