Tourist flow from Russia to the Maldives decreased by 8,4% in 2022
In 2022 the tourist flow from the Russian Federation to the Maldives was 8,38% less than in the record year 2021. There are reasons for this. However, even with the current results, the Maldives has in practice entered the category of mass destinations, surpassing the results of pre-Covid 2019 by 142%.
According to the Immigration Department of the Maldives, 201 952 visits of citizens of the Russian Federation were recorded in the country from January to December 2022.
In 2021, a record year of the Russian tourist flow to the islands, 220 424 visits of Russian tourists were recorded here.
Decrease is due to the difficulties of air traffic after western sanctions against Russian aviation introduced in March. Already in the summer, the situation improved: the airlines found a way out.
In addition, December and New Year's demand for the Maldives in 2022 turned out to be slightly lower than the calculated values. High competition from Thailand also played a role.
Compared to the pre-pandemic year of 2019, the tourist flow from Russia to the Maldives in 2022 increased by 142%, and the destination, in fact, moved into the category of mass ones, especially against the backdrop of a significantly reduced number of countries with affordable direct flights from Russia.
As per the forecasts of travel market experts, in 2023 the Maldives will remain in a category of a highly demanded destination on the Russian market.
