Statistics: What countries did Russians travel to in January-September 2019
Following the results of three quarters of 2019, Turkey remains the undisputed leader in the travel segment. Italy, France, Montenegro and several other countries made a significant contribution in overall growth for the summer season. At the same time, a number of popular destinations show negative dynamics.
According to the data of the Border Service of the Federal Security Service of Russia, over three quarters of 2019, 37 197 522 trips were made outside Russia, which is 6.94% more than last year’s figure (34 782 072).
Of this amount, 37,4% of trips were made in the post-Soviet countries, including the Baltic states, and another 15,6% - in 4 countries bordering Russia (China, Mongolia, Finland and Poland). The remaining 47% of trips were made by Russians to countries of the “far abroad”, which are not bordering Russia.
TOP-10 countries includes such destinations as (in decreasing order): Turkey, Abkhazia, Finland, Kazakhstan, China, Ukraine, Estonia, Italy, Germany and Georgia.
It should be mentioned, that in most countries from the list of leaders Russians do not go with only tourist purposes.
The highest growth compared to the same period last year was demonstrated by Italy, Turkey, China and France. Three of these four countries do not border Russia, which means that the positive dynamics can be fully connected with tourist purposes.
In April-September, in all destinations of the far abroad (excluding all post-Soviet and bordering countries) the Russians made 13 864 986 trips.
Of this number, 77% of trips were made to 13 of the most popular destinations, where the beach holiday is definitely the most popular type of vacation in summer. These are (in decreasing order) Turkey, Italy, Spain, Greece, Cyprus, Tunisia, Bulgaria, Montenegro, United Arab Emirates, Thailand, Vietnam, Croatia and Dominican Republic.
Taking into account such less popular beach destinations as Indonesia, Hainan, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Seychelles, Philippines, etc., the share of “only beach holiday” in the structure of summer preferences among Russian tourists will exceed 80%.
Turkey is an undisputed leader of far abroad holidays: its share in this segment is 51,6% of the total tourist flow to the 13 most popular destinations in the summer season of 2019.
