Russians set an absolute record of tourist flow to the Maldives
At the end of 2021, 222 424 tourists from Russia visited the Maldives. This figure is 2,7 times higher than the previous record of 2019 - every sixth tourist on the islands turned out to be Russian.
According to the Ministry of Tourism of the Maldives, in 2019, 1 702 887 foreign tourists arrived in this country. Of these, 83 369 were Russians. At that time, it became a historical record in the history of Russian tourism to the Maldives. The share of Russians in the tourist flow that year was only 4,9%. Russians were in the 6-th place in the Maldives - after China, India, Italy, Germany and the UK.
According to the Immigration Office of the Maldives, at the end of 2021, the total number of foreign tourists on the Maldives was 1 321 932. But at the same time the number of Russian tourists in the country increased compared to the pre-pandemic record by 267% - or 2,7 times. In January-December, the arrival of 222 424 tourists from the Russian Federation was recorded on the islands.
The share of Russians in the total foreign tourist flow to the Maldives increased by almost three and half times - up to 16,8% (every sixth tourist).
In the peak month of demand, December, 17 611 tourists from Russia arrived on the Maldives in 2021, twice as many as in this month of 2019. At the same time, more than 7 thousand of them (40% of all December arrivals) flew to the Maldives to celebrate the New Year.
