Oil spill on the beaches of Fujairah
On April 11, 2025, an oil spill occurred in the Emirate of Fujairah (UAE) in the port area, located just a few kilometers from the hotel zone. The pollution quickly reached the shore and affected the coastline near the Novotel Fujairah, Al Bahar Hotel & Resort and Ibis Fujairah hotels. As a result of the incident, several beaches were temporarily closed, including the popular Umbrella Beach.
Russian tourists vacationing on the coast of Fujairah complain about the smell of fuel oil and the inability to swim in the sea. This was reported to RBC by the head of international projects Sletat.ru, managing director of the tour operator Let's Fly and an expert of the Russian Union of Travel Industry Lyubov Voronina.
«Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident in Fujairah, an oil spill occurs there almost every season. I think there has been a more global leak now», - Lyubov Voronina noted.
«We are aware from the host partners about the closure of two beaches in the capital of the emirate. Shuttles to the neighboring city of Kalba (Emirate of Sharjah) have been organized for hotel guests, which is about 15 minutes by bus», - the press service of the Space Travel tour operator said. There have been no complaints from tourists in Fujairah yet, but there are requests from customers whose trips will take place in the near future. People are interested in the condition of the beaches and when the consequences of the spill will be eliminated. According to information from local authorities, the cleaning of the beaches will be completed in the next few days.
At the same time, it was noted that only 4-5% of Russians coming to the UAE spend their holidays in Fujairah. This emirate is unpopular, among other things, due to its remoteness from airports and a small number of hotels.
