Russian Foreign Office advised to refrain visiting high-risk areas in Tunisia
In light of the situation prevailing now in Tunisia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia advised Russian citizens who are now in Tunisia to exercise vigilance and refrain from visiting high-risk areas, including those where the Tunisian authorities are conducting counter terrorist operations. Tensions on the Tunisia-Libya border have escalated recently. An attack on the Tunisian border town of Ben Gardane by a group of ISIS terrorists who infiltrated from Libyan territory on March 7 was the largest provocation.
An army barracks, a hospital and police and national guard checkpoints came under attack, leaving 18 people dead, including seven civilians. Tunisian security forces killed 36 terrorists and seized large amounts of weapons. Moscow strongly condemns the terrorist attack, which is aimed at destabilising the situation in the friendly Tunisian Republic and disrupting its ongoing political and economic reforms. Comment by the Information and Press Department regarding escalation on the Tunisia-Libya border.
