Criminal deaths of Russian tourists abroad are very rare
Several incidents this winter, when Russian tourists died abroad, gave rise to many rumors.
Russian Association of Travel Agencies interviewed the experts of Euroince Insurance Company (ex. ERV) According to the insurer; about 300-400 of Russian tourists die abroad in total per year. This figure has not changed for many years. For example, about 50 fatal cases were recorded in Euroince in 2023.
"In fact, the death of tourists due to illegal/criminal actions of third parties is extremely rare, this is the rarest cause of death of our compatriots abroad, such cases are noted every few years," explains Yulia Alcheeva, director of the Euroince Travel Insurance branch.
According to her, the second rarest cause is fatal insurance events because of car crash. Being killed in an road traffic accident is also one of the lowest risks in terms of frequency.
The insurer notes that cardiovascular diseases cause more than 60% of deaths, and 10% are incidents on the water. In the first case, tragic consequences cannot be foreseen. In the second case, a person can influence events by taking more careful precautions.
"From year to year, we record the most often deaths of tourists as part of natural causes, such as heart attack, stroke, internal bleeding, cardiac arrest and others. If we talk about the geography of fatal accidents, such situations can occur with equal frequency both abroad and in Russia. It's just that events that have occurred abroad always have a greater resonance in the media, and their apparent "frequency" is just a media effect," comments the director of the Euroince Travel Insurance branch.
