The Maldives want to develop different types of tourism
The authorities of the Maldives want to abandon the image of a destination suitable only for expensive beach tourism and offer guests new types of tourism on the archipelago.
As Dmitry Smirnov, a representative of the Maldives Tourism Office in Russia said, the archipelago also wants to promote cultural, sports, health and gastronomic tourism, offering guests a variety of excursions to get acquainted with local traditions.
Speaking at a press conference as part of a workshop organized by MMPRC for the Russian travel business, he emphasized that 2024 was a record year for tourism from the Russian Federation to the Maldives.
«Until last year, 2021 was considered a record year, when 222,000 tourists from Russia arrived in the Maldives. But in 2024 this record was broken. Russia took the second place in terms of tourist traffic after China. Traditional Maldivian markets are Great Britain, Italy, Germany, and India. In 2024 the markets of other CIS countries - Kazakhstan, Belarus, and Azerbaijan - were actively growing» - Smirnov specified
