Sri Lanka and India update entry rules
Starting October 15, 2025, visas on arrival in Sri Lanka will no longer be available: entry will be possible only with a pre-approved Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). This must be obtained through the official Online Visa Application portal. Authorities believe this change will reduce queues at airports during peak season by reducing congestion at passport control counters.
Tour operators recommend applying for an ETA at least 48 hours before departure, specifying the exact email address, as it will receive confirmation.
For Russian tourists, obtaining an ETA is free, while citizens of other countries are required to pay a visa fee, the amount of which depends on the travel category.
On October 1, India introduced a single electronic arrival card (e-Arrival Card), which replaces paper immigration forms. All required information must now be submitted online through the Indian Visa Online portal or the Su-Swagatam mobile app no later than 72 hours before entry into the country.
However, the e-Arrival Card is not a replacement for a visa. An electronic or paper visa is still required to enter India.
