Being abroad, Russian tourists prefer to chat online instead of on the mobile phone
Internet roaming service was the only service which consumption abroad has shown growth since the beginning of the tourist season. In May and June, the Internet traffic of people traveling abroad, in PJSC Mobile Telesystems (MTS) increased by 65% compared to the same period a year earlier, in PJSC VimpelCom (brand name - Beeline) by 60%, according to information of the companies. Thus, both mobile operators mentioned drop in voice and sms-traffic, for example, MTS reported that use of voice services abroad fell by 31%, the number of sent sms fell by 33%.
Within two months of the tourist season, the number of users of international roaming was reduced by 20%. At the same time, the number of users of the domestic roaming was up by 12% in VimpelCom, and by 7% in MTS.
Mobile operators explain the increase in Internet consumption primarily due to the increasing number of smartphones among the clients. The number of smartphone users in international roaming has increased by 1.3 times, in national by 1.5 times, according to the MTS. In addition, the growth of data-traffic was due to the development of 3G and LTE, as well as due to the expansion of the list of countries open for Russian subscribers of LTE-roaming.
MTS named the most popular foreign countries to travel in 2014 according to its statistics, these are Turkey, Egypt, Belarus, Italy, Germany, Spain, France, Czech Republic, Cyprus, and United Arab Emirates.
